How to Calculate Your Name Number in Numerology (With Charts & Examples)

Learn how to calculate your name number in numerology by hand — with the full Pythagorean and Chaldean name-to-number charts, plus step-by-step worked examples for your destiny, soul urge and personality numbers.

Your name number is the foundation of name numerology — it is what you check before deciding whether a name is lucky, or whether it needs correction. The good news is that calculating your name number is simple once you have the right chart. This guide shows you exactly how to calculate your name number by hand, with both the Pythagorean and Chaldean letter charts and clear worked examples.

For the meaning of the number you get, keep our pillar guide handy: numerology numbers meaning.

How Letters Become Numbers

In numerology, every letter is assigned a single-digit value. To find a name number, you replace each letter with its value, add them all up, and reduce the total to a single digit (or a master number 11, 22 or 33). There are two main charts for doing this — Pythagorean and Chaldean — and they assign values differently, so your name can total differently under each.

The Pythagorean Name-to-Number Chart

In the Pythagorean system, letters are simply numbered 1 to 9 in alphabetical order, then the cycle repeats.

123456789
ABCDEFGHI
JKLMNOPQR
STUVWXYZ

This is the easiest system for beginners.

The Chaldean Name-to-Number Chart

The Chaldean system — most common in India — assigns values 1 to 8 based on the vibration of each letter, not alphabetical order. The number 9 is not assigned to any letter, as it is traditionally considered sacred.

ValueLetters
1A, I, J, Q, Y
2B, K, R
3C, G, L, S
4D, M, T
5E, H, N, X
6U, V, W
7O, Z
8F, P

Many Indian numerologists prefer Chaldean for names because it is considered more precise. We compare the two fully in Chaldean vs Pythagorean numerology.

How to Calculate Your Name Number — Step by Step

The main name number is the Destiny (or Expression) Number, calculated from all the letters of the name.

Step 1. Write out the name. Step 2. Write each letter’s value underneath, using your chosen chart. Step 3. Add all the values together. Step 4. Reduce the total to a single digit (keep 11, 22 and 33 as they are).

Worked Example (Pythagorean)

Take the name RAVI:

  • R = 9
  • A = 1
  • V = 4
  • I = 9

9 + 1 + 4 + 9 = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5

So RAVI has a Pythagorean name number of 5.

Worked Example (Chaldean)

The same name RAVI in Chaldean:

  • R = 2
  • A = 1
  • V = 6
  • I = 1

2 + 1 + 6 + 1 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1

Notice how the same name gives a different number (5 vs 1) depending on the system — which is exactly why the system you use matters.

The Three Name Numbers (Destiny, Soul Urge, Personality)

Your full name actually gives three numbers, each from a different set of letters:

  • Destiny / Expression Number — from all letters of the name (the calculation above). Your talents and life goals. See the destiny number guide.
  • Soul Urge Number — from the vowels only (A, E, I, O, U). Your inner desires. See the soul urge number guide.
  • Personality Number — from the consonants only. The impression others form of you. See the personality number guide.

To find the soul urge, add only the vowel values and reduce. For the personality number, add only the consonant values and reduce. The destiny number (all letters) is the one most people mean by “name number.”

Which System Should You Use?

Both are valid; they simply give different results. As a guide: use Pythagorean if you want the simplest method or are following Western numerology, and Chaldean if you are following Indian numerology or want the system most practitioners here use for names. Whichever you choose, stay consistent — do not mix charts within one reading.

What Your Name Number Means — and What to Do Next

Once you have your number, look up its traits in numerology numbers meaning. Then the natural next question is whether that number is actually supportive for you — which depends on your date of birth. To find out, read is my name lucky for me, and if your number turns out to be unsupportive, see name correction as per numerology. If you would rather skip the maths, our name numerology calculator does it in both systems instantly.

A Note on How to Read This

Numerology is a traditional belief system, not a science, and there is no scientific evidence that a name number influences personality or fortune. The charts and methods above reflect long-standing numerological tradition and are best used for interest and reflection rather than as fact.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I calculate my name number?

Write out your name, replace each letter with its value from a numerology chart (Pythagorean or Chaldean), add the values together, and reduce the total to a single digit. That single digit is your name (destiny) number.

  2. What is the name-to-number chart?

It is the table that gives each letter its numerology value. In Pythagorean, letters are numbered 1–9 in alphabetical order; in Chaldean, letters are assigned values 1–8 based on vibration, with 9 left unassigned.

  3. Why do Pythagorean and Chaldean give different name numbers?

Because they assign different values to the same letters — Pythagorean by alphabetical order, Chaldean by sound and vibration. The same name can therefore total to different numbers in each system.

  4. What are the three name numbers?

The destiny (expression) number from all letters, the soul urge number from the vowels, and the personality number from the consonants. The destiny number is what most people mean by “name number.”

  5. Should I use my full name or my common name?

Practice varies. Pythagorean readings often use the full birth name, while Chaldean readings frequently use the name you are commonly known by. The key is to be consistent and clear about which you are analysing.

  6. Can I calculate my name number without doing the maths?

Yes — a numerology name calculator will assign the letter values and reduce the total for you in both systems instantly, which is helpful when checking several name spellings.
