In numerology, every letter is assigned a single-digit value. To find a name number, you replace each letter with its value, add them all up, and reduce the total to a single digit (or a master number 11, 22 or 33). There are two main charts for doing this — Pythagorean and Chaldean — and they assign values differently, so your name can total differently under each.
In the Pythagorean system, letters are simply numbered 1 to 9 in alphabetical order, then the cycle repeats.

The Chaldean system — most common in India — assigns values 1 to 8 based on the vibration of each letter, not alphabetical order. The number 9 is not assigned to any letter, as it is traditionally considered sacred.

The main name number is the Destiny (or Expression) Number, calculated from all the letters of the name.
Step 1. Write out the name. Step 2. Write each letter’s value underneath, using your chosen chart. Step 3. Add all the values together. Step 4. Reduce the total to a single digit (keep 11, 22 and 33 as they are).
Take the name RAVI:
9 + 1 + 4 + 9 = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5
So RAVI has a Pythagorean name number of 5.
The same name RAVI in Chaldean:
2 + 1 + 6 + 1 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
Notice how the same name gives a different number (5 vs 1) depending on the system — which is exactly why the system you use matters.
